SPRING HOPE

And what could be more anticipated around the Ponds than the arrival of new baby ducklings?  I got these photos sent to me from Ann Lowrey.  Shelley, from the Woodlands, took them.  She's the one you see occasionally around the ponds with a big telephoto lens..now you see the reason!
In fact I just saw the mother and her chicks cross the road.  Simultaneously, from the upper road I watched a car come in way over the speed limit and was holding my breath wondering if any of the chicks was going to get run over. Some of them, typical kid style, had slowly gotten steam up to run after mum, who by now was over the road with the others, and were scurrying across to her..... shut your eyes..... whew...the car slowed for the speed bump and saw the little ones.  Another escape.
The eagles, hawks and feral cats also await the unwary.  By the time they are big enough  to fend for themselves some will have been caught.  But enough survive to adulthood to fill the ponds with life and another Spring has passed into history.

Meet  Pauline! our new Office face...

Our Annual Garage Sale began well and only got better for most folk attending.  Lots of fun with new and old neighbors as well as sharing tables to boost sales

Our Weiner Roast at Honeymoon Point on April  23 was a very wet and windy day, but the fun of gathering as neighbors outweighed the only slightly dampened spirits!

Maureen leads the Roast
Joan with new neighbor

There was a good sized turnout, too.  Partly because John and Karen McDougall generously contributed a gazebo for covering our table of eats and us too!On a slightly nicer day the local neighbors helped lift it off their deck and carry it up to the campfire area.

My especial thanks to Cathy Trollip for the great photos which she generously shares with me! It's always nice to SEE the events...

For May and June, here is the Social Calendar, thanks to Cathy again for the photo

The changes in the Park are tremendous this year.  Many moving in in the worst possible weather and many more to come.  Sales are booming and new units will be arriving as they come off the assembly line. Please do help me in informing Diane of Welcome Wagon when new neighbors move into your area.!

The buildup of the area along the Wedding Pond with 3 new lots has been fortified with stonework retaining wall...it looks really nice..

On the Garden Front:  photos of the new garden area that is being planned for Residents.  If anyone receiving this blog would like to inquire about this, please contact Agnes Aaberg, as she is the Chairman of the Garden Club.  Her phone is: 250 324 8927. If Brian answers, he can help too! Or talk to one of the Members.

The new location is at the end of Cherry Lane to the left and into the new Works Yard.  Said Garden can be accessed also by foot on the far side of Laughing Pond.  A path leads in directly.

Old location at the end of Cherry Lane

For those of you who know Mary and Harry,  long term RV residents, they have moved from near the new Works Yard to Chris Marshs old place near Butterfly Pond. They have fixed it up as cute as the old place was. Chris, on the other hand, has moved to Campbell River and is happily ensconced in a new RV park there.  He'd be happy to see old faces if you're up that way!
Mary and Harry in new digs..set up pretty!

One more item: on May 20-28 the Chemainus Sketch Group will be showing their works at the Ladysmith Art Gallery:
5 residents are showing their works and would love to meet and greet all interested in seeing what it's all about!

That sums it up for now!  Thanks again for contributors and all who make Chemainus Garden a wonderful place to live.....

Cheers!

Leslie

NEW SURPRISES FOR SPRING

Though we were upIsland for the St. Patricks Day celebrations here, I got some really nice photos anyway...thanks to those contributing!!

Our St. Patrick Day treat!

Though it seems like we've got a permanent winter, and Spring is late and Rain is driving us all crazy, there are things to be happy about and at least one great surprise I can confirm for you.

taking the old road out

Taking down trees is always hard to watch!
We'll never see them this big in our lifetime....

A little sun and...LEAVES!
Beauty in the tiny flowers that currently dot the banks of the side pond near the bridge...

As I ramble about with Skipper I meet lots of the townspeople of Chemainus who are now familiar with us and are curious as to what is taking place "over there" in the Gardens.  For 6 years now I've walked the many variations of trail and asphalt  to get "to town" and have made good friends along the way. The gardeners at CEDAR VILLAGE are great folk and we have many a chat about our ways of dealing with the public in Public places!  Pete and Val do the public garden areas of CEDAR VILLAGE and recently the strata voted to post a sign on the front entry barring those who do not live in the Village from walking their animals through to the ball Park. They are actively enforcing this policy as, sadly, people walking through are letting dogs onto lawns to do their business and the residents are tired of this.  Not that people don't pick up, necessarily, but that they allow the dogs halfway into the private yards to do their business!
We discussed this, as we have our share of THEIR people here and some of the same problems.  Their people feel our woodsy environment  is a great place for their pooches to run free and we walk our dogs through their domain to avoid the mucky and rutted road along the "back ally" to the ball park.
Pete and Val know me because I do the private gardening for one of their strata folk, so Skipper is usually with me and that is fine with the strata.  But while talking to them I got some good news confirmed that another Resident shared with me about a month ago:

The strata has voted to pave the back easement that they own!!
This means the "back ally".  They would like the Residents here to know that this easement has to be kept up by the Village at Village expense ( which means Pete and Val do the ally). They actually own this ally and the only reason we can use it is because of the homes beyond it.  The pavement will end at the end of the VILLAGE itself, but that fine by me!

Pete and Val are happy to make it a nicer road for everyone, but would really like our cooperation in PICKING UP DOG POOH.  Many ( not just us) feel that once in the ally they can let the dogs loose and wherever they do their business is up to them.  Sincerely, as one who has had to scoop the leavings of dogs and cats from public areas, there is no nastier job!  Especially if it is in long grass or leaves. We can give no greater thanks  to them than observing the request of a good neighbor!  I for one will be glad to have a smooth walk down a road without potholes!!
This will be so nice, as it's just been a lousy "pet walking" year!
The plan is for the end of May, though it might take longer...at least there is HOPE for Fall!!

In other news, we welcome back Kirk and Wanda Bellamy and dog SweetPea to the "cool" South Island.  It's so nice to see the Snow birds return.  Dave Adman  should be here soon, too, I think.
Welcome Home!

While on a trip out to DINTERS Nursery we decided to stop at the
CROSSROADS  CENTER on the corner of Koksilah and the Island Highway.  We wanted to have a couple of mattresses done for our van and knew there was a foam shop there.  WELL.  There's more than that!

I spent time in the GREAT GREENS Farm Market and got some very good pricing on everything from vitamins to cheesie puffs that don't use genetically modified corn!  Fresh bread, a deli and a wonderful coffee shop are there also.  In fact these people really know how to get loyal customers....I'll give an example:
We stopped by to pick up a sandwich for lunch while going to Victoria earlier in the week the sandwiches were SO good!   Well, we ordered  coffee before we started on our way and I got a latte.  I decided to treat us by purchasing a strawberry scone..they had fresh ones out.  So while I finished shopping, Charlie bit in.  He didn't say, but when I bit in I thought maybe there was a surprise cream cheese center, but it was DOUGH.  I got up, took it to the counter and told the girl the story.  She immediately gave me my money back and INSISTED that I take anything else I might like to substitute...bar nothing.  I was quite insistent that it was fine and I'd just buy another thing to eat with the reimbursement. "NO" she said,"our treat....you must get over the awful sensation of having dough in your mouth!I must make sure you come back for a pleasant experience!"   I was  truly grateful and chose a wonderful cookie and had it for lunch too!
You can bet they've made a friend for life!

And if you love horses or the kind of things that Equestrians love, you'll not want to miss the Equine Emporium.Carrying shirts, shoes, dresses, blouses....wow. I loved the fragrance of leather ( a fragrance that I've lived with for almost 50 years till lately).

An equally lovely shop is called BELLA'S Gifts and More.  I got a small porcelain koi fish for my collection!  It was very reasonably priced.
The Foam shop told me that they are joining with the larger supplier of foam from Nanaimo.  They will have many more features and better pricing by doing this.  They invite anyone to check them out if you need any custom work for RV's or home.

Well, though the forcast is for more liquid sunshine, we will hope that the REAL sun will be peeking out for more warmth for us.,
Have a wonderful day!

Cheers,

Leslie

MARCH: IN LIKE A LION...

Witch Hazel blooms
Smelling so sweet at a grey time of year!

After a long grey and snowy week, my birthday arrived the last day of February and I was given the choice of going to an Art store in Nanaimo or going to Dinters'  Nursery.  Even though I love Art stores, I  chose the Nursery!  I was determined to get a Witch Hazel bush, as I don't want one more winter that has no color in the garden.  It cheers me up to see the bright yellow color and the fragrance is wonderful.  So I found the bush I liked and brought it home to plant after a coffee in Dinter's bistro and later a lunch out.
       Deer don't like Witch Hazel
( funny smell I guess) and it will fill in a hole that was made by a plant that "didn't make it" during this hard winter.

I got photos of the Chili Cookoff from Sylvia, who is managing the Resident's FB page. Since there are some in the Gardens that don't frequent FB, she has graciously allowed me to copy from her page so that I can pass on the fun to everyone. Her write up of the event: The chili cook-off was a great success! Nine entrants pulled out all the stops - extra garnishes, corn bread, chocolate muffins, decorations and even costumes - but in the end, three chilis had the edge! Congrats Sylvia, Sharon and Gavin!!! Next up: Irish stew!

And then there was DIRTY DANCING...with the ladies in their comfortable clothing and with other "cheer".  They reported to have had a great time together and are keen to have film for all the women to just have a night out!

Mary, Liz and Agnes

Here's to you!

Now another event is planned to pass the grey hours!  Try to make it, as it is so enriching to have as many as possible join in...the food is always wonderful. If you are shy, please don't hesitate to arrange with a neighbor to come !  Or, even better, just COME.  We all were "first timers" here and understand it totally.  The way to join Community is to JOIN!  You'll be pleasantly surprised at how at home you feel after one of our Social Events.

As is usual for me on a Sunday afternoon, I took Skipper up to the Bistro Sunday before last to relax and read the TIMES COLONIST.  As we were approaching the Bistro I noticed Fran coming out to inform Tony that she wasn't ready yet....??? THAT piqued my interest! So I went in and found a group of women that were having a decoration party.  They were cutting out theme objects for the upcoming St. Patricks celebratory get together this Friday at the Pavilion. Plans were flying on decor and possible music and food

Of course Cathy Trollip was there, but she was taking the pictures!  I didn't actually help much but was delighted to join for what time I had. I love to do this kind of thing and if you would also be interested in helping when these preparations are being made DO let Fran know!  She and her group have really done an outstanding job of taking over the Events program.  It's always entertaining. Please plan on meeting newcomers as well as oldies like myself and Charles, Barry and Karen, Dave and Jane and Kolleen and Gerry and more! You learn many things that you might not know otherwise.  Many have come from other Provinces and know what you might need to know in your own transition.

Speaking of recommendations.  I've used CHEMAINUS HARDWARE for the last 6 years to buy items from nails to paint, especially if I was in a hurry.  Though the service was pleasant, the prices were usually higher (understandable).  So I was divided about supporting local business while needing a good price, too.  I solved my dilemma by purchasing whatever I could locally and making a list to shop CANADIAN TIRE for things that could wait.
Well.  Now the local business has been bought out by ACE HARDWARE and it is a knockout for variety AND competitive pricing!  I just painted 3 bathrooms at St. Michaels All Angels church and the total cost of the paint was $90.00.  AND it is TOP quality paint.  I do recommend you look it over.  There are literally thousands of new items and even the ones they've always carried are considerably less than before.  I, for one, will shop there unless they don't have a needed product.  Do check it out...and NO I don't get paid to say this!!!

Also I might share this.  Skipper has only had occasional ear infections in his 13 years, but the last couple of years he suffers from them a lot. So I read up on it a little and think I have found a reason.  Up until 2 years ago there were a number of dogs in the park, but not that many.  The ground was mostly bush. Now, however, with more people come more pets ( and I love them all!), but also comes ground that is saturated with urine and fecal matter.
When he comes in, if his ears itch, he scratches.  This, in turn inflames the flap of ear.  I had always treated his ears with vinegar, water and boric acid, to overcome yeasts that like the warm dark of the ear canal. This year, however, this is not working. So I found out that not just yeast may be the problem, but bacteria....found on the nails and pads of the dog.  When they scratch, voila, bacteria come into the canal.  So I took Jane Hobsons prescription of Polysporin, Cortaid, and Monistat to sooth and heal the ear and also have been cleaning his feet off at the door with a vinegar wash...to disinfect his pads and nails. Seems to work!

Well, with that I will bore you no longer.  Hope to see you soon!

Cheers,

Leslie

JULY AND AUGUST the dog days of summer...

By July the garden at Chemainus Garden was in full swing.  New beds were constructed that weren't claimed. Many pros...
